Thoughts on 5:30 am Swimming

Some thoughts on getting up at 5:30 am to swim

"Good morning, sunshine!" is not a phrase I hear often because when I have to get up early, I'm no sunshine. So when I found out my training routine was going to require two workouts on the same day, several days a week, the only option was to start doing one of the routines super early in the morning before everybody gets up (or face the wrath of Mrs. Pherplexed and my kids for being absentee).

I decided swimming would be my early morning session mostly because the pool I would be using is super close to my house. So, after three full weeks into my new schedule, I have some thoughts to share on my 5:30am swimming routine:

Week 1

This sucks.

Week 2

Still sucks.

Week 3

You know those really annoying people who get up super early – like 5:30 am – to exercise or some other feel-good crap? They always say stuff like "It's so peaceful being up so early...I have all this time to myself and get to enjoy the peace and quiet. It really gets my day started right." To which I would roll my eyes and respond with something like: "That's nice. You know what else is peaceful? SLEEPING."

Y'all...I may have just become that guy. When a friend commented on how early I'd been getting up to swim, I caught myself saying my 5:30 am swim sessions were FUN.  I SAID THEY WERE FUN. And for some reason, I didn't stop there. I actually went on to say: "It's so refreshing – no talking, no loud music...just swimming."  Ew. I don't even know who I AM anymore.
